Can anyone use the terms «organic», «bio» or «eco» for foodstuffs?
The terms are legally protected under the EU Organic Regulation and the Swiss Ordinance on Organic Farming. Anyone wishing to label and market their products as organic (or use derivative or diminutive terms, such as bio or eco) must adhere to strict production standards and submit to annual inspections.
Organic certification bodies check at least once annually whether the production, processing and trading standards are being met. For the purposes of certification the results of the inspection are assessed by an additional person. Operators that are not being inspected must not market their products as organic products.
